Today I gave my son oatmeal infant cereal for the first time since last month when he had a severe vomiting episode.  Although at the time of the first episode he had eaten oatmeal previously in a smaller amount I worried it might have been the cause, that or the bananas that he had with it. (I should learn to listen to my ‘momtuition’ aka my gut)

Yesterday he had bananas with rice cereal and had no issues.  Today I gave him the oatmeal and he had the same exact reaction as a month ago.  Two hours after eating it he had severe vomiting.  To the point of being unable to catch his breath and to the point of having nothing left but stomach acid to vomit.  (I know, graphic but you’ll live).

Both episodes were identical in nature.  To the point that today I knew that about an hour after the episode started the vomiting would reoccur and I was ready with a rag to deal with it.  I felt so bad for him.  You could tell it hurt his little body and just exhausted him.  After it was all done he slept for about an hour and a half.

I have been on the hunt for research on allergies in babies to oatmeal.  There isn’t much out there.  I have learned that an allergy to oatmeal could mean an allergy to gluten… I know that would be difficult to deal with.  I also learned that most reactions to oatmeal are mild, stomach discomfort, gas or even a rash.  Reactions that are more severe, as in Aiden’s case, could lead to even more serious reactions like some people have to seafood or peanuts where the airway can become swollen and restricted!  Scary stuff!

He has a doctor’s appointment on December 4 and all my concerns will be brought to the table.  Hopefully I will get more answers and he will do some further testing.  I think I would rather him go through some allergy testing that doing it the hard way and finding out he has an allergy to other things by a severe or even life threatening reaction occurring.

So, I am on the hunt for more information.  If any of my readers now of anyone dealing with this situation or resources please share in the comment section below.
