Review: Magic Jack
First let me tell you right up front. I was sent a magic jack free of charge to try and see how I like it. My review is not bias in any way but will be totally straight forward and honest as to how I liked the product.
Installation: Was easy! Didn’t take but a couple of minutes. Once it’s done it will tell you to wait on a confirmation email and you click on that link to activate your account. It says it can take up to an hour. I had mine in about 45 minutes.
During the initial set up you choose your area and city for a phone number. Another thing you do during set up is set up your 911 information. This is an important and I was glad to see it was included.
Draw back #1 for me is there really wasn’t anything close by that would make mine a “local” number for all. I know most people now days have unlimited long distance plans so this really wouldn’t be that big of a deal.
However, once at the website you see a MAJOR advantage. You can get FIVE years of phone service for less than $60!! That is less than a buck a month!! (at least that was the offer given to me when I initially went through sign up).
When you purchase Magic Jack you can try it free for a month, the offer is on their website. If you purchase from a retailer it comes w/one year of service and you can get an additional year for 19.95. Even at that price if you don’t take the other offer you can still save a bundle. Right now I use Vonage and it’s right at 30 a month!
SOUND QUALITY: Is awesome! I have had no issues with it. I have used it just over two weeks before writing my review to give me some time to see if any issues popped up with required to quality. They haven’t. (I do have cable internet service, your quality may be different based on your provider, I’m sure—it will not work on a dial up connection OR satellite connection)
You can make and receive calls from a phone plugged into the magic jack OR from your computer using a mic and speakers or headset w/microphone attached. I LOVE this feature. I have done both and sound quality is great both ways. When you call from your computer a neat little dialer pops up for you to dial from, even stores contacts and incoming and outgoing calls:
You can dial from pointing your mouse to the numbers or using the keypad on your keyboard.
If you travel and use a laptop you can take your magic jack with you and have your phone w/you at the hotel/motel! This is a great feature! It’s very small, just a bit larger than a flash drive… so not a big space taker upper.
So, for the money savings and sound quality a great product.
There are a couple of draw backs. Your COMPUTER MUST BE ON in order for you to make or receive calls. This to me is a major drawback. I like to shut my computer down at night. Therefore my calls will not come through. They do have a way around this. You can forward your calls to another phone (your cell or whatever) BUT you will have to remember to enable the feature each night.
It does have voicemail. If you do not forward calls and your computer is off your calls will go to the voicemail.
With Vonage you can set up an alternate number for your calls to automatically forward to if your internet connection is not working. Magic Jack would be perfect with this feature. If it auto forwarded when the connection was not available I wouldn’t have to worry about forgetting to forward the calls every night when I shut down the computer. So overall a great product. If features and money savings far out weigh the few drawbacks.
