Disconnected and Discombobulated
This was composed the other day during our internet/cable blackout….
Wow! How reliant we have become on technology!
This morning at 9:36 a.m. ( I know this because a talk show I DVR quit taping at that time) our cable and hence internet and phone went out. This didn’t bug me too much as we have a great cable company in Brighthouse Networks and generally an outage is very short. They are also very rare. When noon rolled around and I was still not back in the “real” world I decided to call. I took about 10 times of trying over the next hour to finally get through. The recording informed me that “there is an outage in your area, we apologize and are working on it. Generally an outage is repaired in two hours or less”. Well, since we were going on three hours I decided to wait and talk to a service rep.
His first response “I think I know what is going on. If you are where I think you are….it’s not good”. Now that isn’t something you want to hear come out of the mouth of the person who knows when your internet will be back up. He put me on hold to “check” and came back and said “yup, it’s going to be awhile. Someone took out a pole, which not only took down regular cable but took down the fiber optic cable. Repair crews are on site however, it will be quite awhile before repairs are complete”.
To keep myself from majorly over reacting I asked for his definition of “quite awhile” I asked: “is your quite awhile hours or days?” He chuckled and said “not days”. Well, that’s a relief!
Thursday is the day I generally log on to my internet banking check the balance and then go to some of my bill sites and pay some bills. I was also expecting an email I need to check today AND I have a package I wanted to track.
Oh my! How did we ever survive with out all the technology of today? We didn’t know a package would arrive on our doorstep in advance! We had to lick stamps and MAIL bills! We had to go to the bank or call or even worse yet actually keep up with our check book register to know what was in our account! How did we manage?
If you are actually reading this… then I am back in the real world. I can write my posts in live writer with out the being connected to the net but they sure won’t post without it!
